    "Il Giardino" - The Garden

The garden at Casa Della Zia is a hidden gem, steeped in charm and tradition. At its heart is a 200-year-old outdoor oven, perfect for baking traditional focaccia during special lunches. A handcrafted tile table, paired with a wrought iron frame and chairs by an artisan from Spoleto, adds a touch of elegance. Stroll along the pink limestone path through a patch of green grass, bordered by flower pots that bloom from spring to fall. You'll also find a hazelnut tree, a fragrant bay leaf bush, and a variety of herbs lining the fence, creating a serene and inviting retreat.

    The Cantina

At Casa Della Zia, our cantina is a window into history and tradition. This atmospheric space, featuring an ancient canale once used to crush grapes for winemaking, reflects the deep connection between Italian village life and its agricultural roots. In medieval times, cantinas like ours were essential for storing wine and olive oil, serving as both practical storage spaces and gathering places where neighbors shared stories, food, and drinks.

Today, we embrace this legacy by using our cantina as a cozy meeting place for workshop sessions or simply as a retreat to enjoy a glass of local Italian wine. Whether you're soaking in the ambiance of its rustic charm or marveling at the historic canale, our cantina invites you to connect with the timeless spirit of Umbria.

    meet your Italian-American hostess

I'm Jessica Vecchione, an American citizen based in the Catskills of New York State. I'm the owner of Casa della Zia and will be your hostess during your Umbrian adventure.

My mother, a native of Rome, and father, a first generation Italian-American, met during the liberation of Rome in 1945. In 1953, my father went back to Italy to rekindle the friendship he made during wartime with the beautiful young Italian woman. Three weeks later, they were married. I was born in New Jersey in the 50's, but many in my family, on both my mother and father's side, still lives in Italy, and the Umbrian region. I was fortunate enough to spend many summers in Italy as a child and as a teen and have been back and forth numerous times since. I am fluent in Italian and love to roll my r's when I'm in Italy!

In 2023, I was fortunate enough to purchase a home in Vallo di Nera, a place which has been in my heart since 1968 when my mother's sister, my Aunt (Zia) Luigina brought me there for the first time. I loved staying in my Aunt's house and that's how the name "Casa della Zia" came about.

My beautiful stone-walled Italian home, is where I host small groups, family, and friends during their travels. Since purchasing the home I have made several updates to ensure the comfort of my guests, including new linens, towels, and other necessities, as well as connecting Wi-Fi. The home always has a well-stocked wine cellar and snack cabinet, and plenty of firewood for the cooler seasons.

I'd love to talk more about what you would like to get out of a trip to Italy - the itinerary is yours to control. Reach out and we'll make your dream into a reality.
